Gadespring Discovery Days

In June 2022 we ran a 2 week long education programme for the first time on the River Bulbourne, in partnership with the Boxmoor Trust.

Education Sessions

Each class had an introductory talk to chalk streams and wildlife and the issues that affect the River Bulbourne. We then went on to do some physical geography exercises where we also looked at the natural features of a chalk stream and the human modifications to the river. With the help of the Boxmoor Trust volunteers they also were able to take part in kick sampling and investigate the invertebrates that live in the river. Classes that had more time at the site were also able do to some bird watching, find out more about the history of the watercress beds and to take part in a “escape room” style activity all about water vole conservation.

Feedback

“Just a quick email to say a huge thank you for our wonderful river experience last Wednesday!
Both of our Year 3 classes loved the trip and it was so well organised for us so thank you.
Hopefully, we can repeat the experience next year with our next bunch of Year 3 children”.
Class teacher, Galley Hill Primary.

“The children had a fabulous time and came back buzzing with all they had done”. Teacher, Westbrook Hay school.

We would like to repeat this programme again in summer 2023. Schools have already expressed an interest in returning and the Boxmoor trust wish to support the sessions again.
