Hundreds of children take on the Chalk Stream Challenge

The River Chess Chalk Stream Challenge, launched in Autumn 2024, invites families and groups to explore chalk streams through a self-guided walk and engaging activities. Originally created by volunteers for the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme in Hampshire, the idea was adapted for the Chess with support from the Smarter Water Catchment Project and CCSP.

Since its launch, there has been a strong uptake from Scouts, Girl Guides, home-educating families, and individuals.

A standout success was Ley Hill School, which incorporated the challenge into its Geography Week, encouraging pupils to participate with their families over the weekend and holidays. Over 85 students took part and received their special badge during a celebratory assembly.

Another highlight was a dedicated day hosted by Girlguiding Hertfordshire in partnership with CCSP. More than 180 guides joined in, where they took part in lots of different river related activities along the route of the challenge at Chesham Moor. These included learning about river invertebrates, listening to stories of the riverbank and looking for other wildlife. It was fantastic to meet girls from nearby and also further afield and see their enthusiasm for learning about chalk streams.

We look forward to even more families and groups joining the adventure this summer!
